Non-GMO Snacks and Pantry Staples: 21 Picks With the Claim Checked

These non-GMO snacks, pantry staples and supplements are for shoppers who want to know what a non-GMO claim on a package actually rests on. Every pick is called non-GMO by its own brand, and we checked each claim against an independent record. Most picks are Non-GMO Project Verified, which we confirmed in the Non-GMO Project’s own Product Finder; a few are brand claims or a different testing program, and we label those clearly.

How we picked

We went through every product on Supercery with a non-GMO claim. Where the Non-GMO Project Product Finder lists the exact item as Verified, we say Non-GMO Project Verified; seventeen picks qualify. For four more, the brand makes a non-GMO claim that an independent listing repeats, but the item is not in the Product Finder, so we call it a brand claim and say so. We left out other brand-only claims where the independent support was thin. We have not tasted or tested these products ourselves.

Non-GMO Project Verified versus a brand claim

The Non-GMO Project says its Standard requires ingredient tracing, segregation and testing of major ingredients that are high risk for being GMO. A product that meets it can carry the butterfly seal and appears in the Product Finder. A plain “non-GMO” line on a package is the brand’s own statement, and some brands use a separate program, such as the “Igen Non-GMO Tested” mark on Carlson fish oil. Neither is wrong, but they are not the same check, so look for the butterfly if Non-GMO Project verification matters to you.

FAQ

What does the Non-GMO Project butterfly mean?

It means the product meets the Non-GMO Project Standard, which the Non-GMO Project says requires ingredient tracing, segregation and testing of high-risk major ingredients. You can check a product in the Product Finder.

Is a “non-GMO” claim without the butterfly meaningless?

No, but it is the brand’s own statement or another program’s mark, not Non-GMO Project verification. Read which mark is on the package.

Is non-GMO the same as organic?

They are separate claims. Several picks here, such as Bragg, Coombs and San-J, carry both organic and non-GMO claims, but check each label for the specific marks.

Should I talk to my doctor before taking these supplements?

Yes. Talk to your doctor before starting a new supplement, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, take medication or have a health condition.
