The ThermoWorks ThermoPop 2 is a handheld instant-read food thermometer with an auto-rotating backlit display and a 4.5 inch or 8 inch probe. It is made for quick checks near the end of cooking, not for staying in the oven.
Who it suits
It suits home cooks who check steaks, chops, chicken, fish, frying oil or candy. For long roasts and smoking, where you want an alarm without opening the oven, a leave-in probe thermometer fits better. Our instant-read vs probe thermometer guide compares the two spec by spec.
Key facts
- Read time 2 to 3 seconds with the 4.5 inch probe, 3 to 4 seconds with the 8 inch probe (ThermoWorks)
- Range -58 to 572°F; accuracy ±1°F from 14 to 208°F, ±4°F from 392 to 572°F, ±3°F elsewhere; NIST-traceable calibration certificate included (ThermoWorks)
- IP67 waterproof rating; one CR2032 battery listed at 4,000 hours; auto-off after 10 minutes, which can be disabled (ThermoWorks manual)
- 1.26 inch display; 2-year warranty (ThermoWorks)
What reviewers say
AngryBBQ, which says ThermoWorks sent it the unit, reported readings within 0.8 degrees of a Thermapen ONE in its ice water check and liked the large display, but noted the ThermoPop 2 is not as fast or as accurate as pricier models. The Grilling Dad compared it with several thermometers in a sous vide water bath and said it stood out among the smaller models, ahead of the Weber Instant Read on accuracy.
Pros
- Display turns to stay upright in either hand, with a backlight
- IP67 rating, so the maker says it handles splashes and quick rinses
Cons
- The backlight lasts 10 seconds per press, which The Grilling Dad found inconvenient
- No alarm and not for leaving in the oven or grill
- Slower than ThermoWorks’ Thermapen models, per AngryBBQ
Cautions
ThermoWorks says not to expose the whole thermometer to more than 190°F or leave it inside ovens, and to clean the probe after each use. The coin battery is a swallowing hazard; keep new and used batteries away from children. For target temperatures, use the FoodSafety.gov chart.
