Thorne vs Momentous Creatine: Label Facts Side by Side

Thorne and Momentous both sell an unflavored creatine monohydrate powder, and on paper the two tubs look almost the same. This page puts the two labels side by side so you can see where they match and where they differ: scoop size, servings, net contents, the words “micronized” and “Creapure”, the seals each label prints, the NSF listing details, directions and warnings. We carry both: Thorne Creatine and Momentous Creatine Monohydrate.

If you want a line-by-line walk through a creatine label first, start with creatine monohydrate: how to read the label. This page skips the basics and sticks to the comparison.

The two labels at a glance

The figures below come from each brand’s product page and from the label records in the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database: DSLD 298066 for the Thorne tub and DSLD 321458 for the Momentous tub.

Label line Thorne Creatine Momentous Creatine
Serving size 1 scoop (5 g) 1 scoop (5 g)
Creatine monohydrate per serving 5 g 5 g
Servings per container 90 90
Net contents on the label record 16 oz (450 g) 15.8 oz (450 g)
Other ingredients None listed None listed
Daily Value Not established Not established
Seals on the label record NSF Certified for Sport NSF Certified for Sport, Informed Sport
Free-from lines on the label record Gluten free Gluten free, GMO free

By our arithmetic, 90 scoops of 5 g each come to 450 g, which matches the 450 g both label records print. So on the tubs we carry, one scoop is the same amount of creatine monohydrate and one tub holds the same number of scoops.

Micronized and Creapure: product page words, not panel words

Neither Supplement Facts panel uses the word “micronized”. Both brands use it on their product pages. The Thorne product page describes its powder as a micronized form of creatine monohydrate. The Momentous product page calls its powder “ultrafine micronized creatine monohydrate”. Both panels list the ingredient simply as creatine monohydrate.

Neither label record names Creapure. Thorne’s page does not name a branded creatine source. The Momentous page answers the question directly: it says “Momentous no longer sources creatine from Creapure” and that its “Signature Spec Creatine” is made in a pharmaceutical facility to the company’s own specification. If you have an older Momentous tub that mentions Creapure, it may be an earlier label. Read the tub you have.

Seals: what each label prints

Both label records list the NSF Certified for Sport mark. The Momentous label record also lists the Informed Sport mark. The Thorne label record lists only the NSF mark. For what the NSF program checks and what it does not promise, see NSF Certified for Sport: what it tests and who needs it.

The NSF listings themselves differ in two details worth checking before you buy:

  • Lots. The NSF listing for Thorne Creatine names specific lot numbers. The NSF listing for Momentous Creatine Monohydrate shows “All” in the lot field. If you compete in a tested sport, match the lot number on your Thorne tub to the listing.
  • Package sizes. The Thorne listing names a 453 g package with a 1 scoop (5 g) serving. The Momentous listing names 5 g, 75 g, 150 g and 450 g packages with the same 1 scoop (5 g) serving.

The 453 g on the Thorne listing and the 450 g on the Thorne label record are both what each source prints. We have not weighed a tub.

Formats beyond the 90 serving tub

Each brand sells more than one size, so check that the label you read matches the product you buy.

  • Thorne: the product page offers 90 and 180 serving options. Thorne also sells a 30 stick pack version, which has its own label record, DSLD 336362, with a 5.15 g stick that lists 5 g of creatine monohydrate. Our label guide notes how that format differs from the tub.
  • Momentous: the NSF listing covers the package sizes above, from a single 5 g serving up to the 450 g tub.

The product pages on Supercery are the 90 serving unflavored tubs.

Directions

The two brands ask for a different amount of liquid:

  • Thorne: the label says to mix 1 scoop with at least 8 ounces of water, juice or another drink daily, or as your health-care professional recommends, and that it can be used 30 to 90 minutes before or after exercise (DSLD 298066).
  • Momentous: the label record says to take one scoop with 6 to 8 fluid ounces of water or another liquid, 30 to 90 minutes before or after training (DSLD 321458). The current product page says 6 to 8 oz of water.

Free-from lines: label vs product page

The label records and the product pages do not list the same free-from words, so it helps to know which is which.

Warnings and storage text

The Thorne label record carries three lines: if pregnant, consult your health-care practitioner before use; use only if the bottle is sealed; store tightly sealed in a cool, dry place. The Thorne product page adds that the product is contraindicated for anyone with a history of hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients.

We did not find a warning or storage statement in the DSLD record for the Momentous tub. That does not mean there is none on your tub, so read the container you have.

Claim wording on both labels

Both labels print structure/function statements, the short lines about what the maker says the product supports, and both carry the FDA disclaimer that goes with them. We do not repeat those statements here. Our guide to reading a supplement label explains what that kind of wording is and what the disclaimer means.

How to choose between them

Because the dose, the scoop and the servings match on the tubs we carry, the choice comes down to label details rather than amounts:

  • If you want a second testing seal on the label, the Momentous label record lists Informed Sport as well as NSF.
  • If you compete in a tested sport and want to match a lot number, the Thorne NSF listing names its lots.
  • If you want a bigger tub or single-serve sticks, Thorne offers a 180 serving option and a 30 stick pack.
  • If a vegan statement matters to you, Momentous says vegan on its product page; Thorne’s page lists dairy free and soy free.
  • If you drink a smaller glass, the Momentous directions ask for 6 to 8 fluid ounces; Thorne asks for at least 8.

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before you start creatine or any new supplement, especially if you are pregnant or nursing, take medication or have a kidney or other health condition.
